NYC SOTA Program: Everything You Need to Know
What Is the NYC SOTA Program?
The Special One-Time Assistance (SOTA) Program is a housing assistance initiative by New York City’s Department of Homeless Services (DHS). It helps eligible individuals and families move out of NYC shelters by covering up to one full year of rent in a new apartment—whether in New York or out of state.
This program is designed to provide long-term housing stability for those experiencing homelessness and struggling with the high cost of living in NYC.
Who Qualifies for SOTA?
To be eligible for SOTA, applicants must:
✔️ Have lived in a NYC shelter for at least 90 consecutive days
✔️ Have a steady source of income to afford rent after the first year
✔️ Find a qualifying apartment that passes a housing inspection
✔️ Secure a lease with a willing landlord who accepts the program
How Does the SOTA Program Work?
-
Find a Rental – Tenants must locate an apartment that meets SOTA requirements. This can be in New Jersey or any other state.
-
Landlord Approval – The landlord must agree to participate and complete required paperwork.
-
Housing Inspection – The unit is inspected to ensure it meets safety and quality standards.
-
Lease Signing & Rent Payment – Once approved, NYC pays one year of rent upfront directly to the landlord.
-
Tenant Moves In – The tenant is responsible for covering rent after the first year using their own income.
Benefits for Tenants & Landlords
-
For Tenants: Immediate access to stable housing with no upfront rental costs.
-
For Landlords: Guaranteed full-year rent payment upfront, reducing financial risk.
